| Dr. Kirit Parikh looks into the future – Energy Independence by 2030 |

Dr. Kirit S. Parikh, Member, Planning Commission presented a comprehensive energy scenario of the country in the Second Theme Session of the Petrotech-2007 on 17 January, 2007. Comparing the present energy consumption-demand patterns of the country vis-à-vis the global scenario, Dr. Parikh presented the upcoming energy requirement in view of a sustained GDP growth target of 8-9% in next 25 years and the possible sources of meeting that requirement.

Dr. Parikh, the Chief architect of the Integrated Energy Policy document, prescribed several means to realize that the Energy Independence vision of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, viz. (i) augmenting total domestic energy supply, (ii) replacing Natural Gas with Naphtha, FO, HSDO for industrial use and LPG SKO for domestic use, (iii) more utilization of Natural gas for power generation, (iv) decentralization of production of Bio-fuel, (v) encouraging ethanol blending with petrol, (vi) replacing diesel with Natural gas for generators and pumps, (vii) promoting urban mass transport and railway freight services, (viii) improving efficiency in all kinds of engines (ix) encouraging hybrid vehicles and finally (x) eliminating Oil dependence within next 40 to 50 years through various renewable sources of energy.

Incidentally, the vision of Energy Independence by 2030 was mandated by the President to ONGC in its Golden Jubilee celebrations on 14th August 2005.

Dr. Parikh observed that given the specific situation of India, the country will remain dependant on fossil fuel basket, with coal dominating, and Natural Gas percentage rising with a corresponding reduction in oil consumption. He wanted focus on making fossil fuel sources cleaner, by use of proper technology.

Dr. Parikh’s speech concluded with a ‘Carbon free energy scenario’ and ‘Need of technological breakthrough’. Mr. S.C. Tripathi, former Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, chaired the session.
