| It
is the need of the geotechnical engineering profession in India to
use its resources optimally by pooling and sharing it. For this to
realise, there is a requirement to know the facilities and expertise
available in the country and the organisations and individuals that
cater to the profession. The first step in this direction is to have
a centralised information of the resources, expertise and database
available in the country.
This aspect
was deliberated during the Special Interactive Group session of
GEOSHORE Conference held in December, 1999, organised as a part
of 3–year institutional co-operation program between Institute of
Engineering & Ocean Technology (IEOT) of ONGC and Norwegian
Geotechnical Institute, Norway. To deliberate further on the issue
a workshop was organised by IEOT at IIT, Mumbai in December, 2000.
Based on the recommendations of the workshop, Centre for Geotechnical
Resources in India (CGRI) has been opened in IEOT, ONGC with a Steering
Committee consisting of following persons:
| Prof A Sridharan |
Chairman |
| Mr A K Sonawane |
GM, (IEOT) |
| Prof M R Madhav |
President- IGS |
| Prof N Som |

The immediate objective of CGRI is to collect all the information
on resources including human resources, equipment, software, infrastructure,
database etc. and network the renowned institutions, organisations
and individuals in India in the field of geotechnical engineering.
Formats have been devised after
consulting many experts and professionals in India with facility of
online submission or can be downloaded, filled in and sent to R K
Choudhary, In-charge, CGRI, IEOT, ONGC complex phase II,
Panvel, Navi Mumbai-410221 or e-mail to cgri_ieot@hotmail.com
